Recently during one of my coaching session, I introduced the metaphor of the “Car on the Road”. Picture this…’You are on a journey towards a destination 3 hours ahead. During the drive you will see different views on the left and right and will sometimes be tempted to stop: to take a photo/view a lovely scenery, or to buy some food, or just to stretch your legs, or to the toilet or even just for no reason at all’.
This metaphor is a powerful one. For example, to a person who is trying to get to a destination without much Distraction…some left and right stopovers could mean activities/things in their life that are either “Draining” or “Fuelling” them. And most of the time, the person will never realize what is happening. Here are some steps to counter this; 1) Be aware of All Stopovers 2) Identify if these are Beneficial (Fuel) or Non-Beneficial (Drain) 3) Reject the Drainers 4) Focus on the Goal / Destination.
Perhaps you too can identify to this metaphor. Do you feel your journey towards a goal is filled with lots of obstacles or distractions…if so, perhaps you need to stop and ask for directions, or perhaps just take a short break, or perhaps check if there are stops that will Fuel you…or maybe even ask the question..
